The Case for Restraint in Visual Design

4 min read20 November 2024

Visual complexity presented as sophistication is one of the great deceits of modern design culture. Here's why the most skilled designers are experts at saying no.

There's a trend in design portfolios right now: maximal visual complexity presented as sophistication. 3D elements, particle systems, infinite scroll reveals, custom cursors that write essays as you move. It's impressive as a technical achievement. It's rarely impressive as a designed experience.

Restraint is not the absence of ambition. It's the evidence of it.

The most skilled designers we've worked with are experts at saying no — to one more gradient, to the additional animation, to the fourth font weight in a component. They understand that visual noise is an inverse signal of design confidence. When everything is emphasised, nothing is. The art of restraint is knowing exactly which 20% of the design does 80% of the work, and making only that matter.
